In Tokyo, free wireless Internet access is available at some cheap business hotels too (including Capsule Hotels).

But in general in Japan wired internet access (very fast!)is much more common than wireless one.

You can wear pretty much whatever you like in Japan and people won't even notice. Older men sometimes wear caps with fake insignia, so you will fit right in! Hopefully you will show good manners at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and remove your hat!

In order to travel to Japan, here are some important documents that you will need:

1. A valid passport

2. A tourist visa. (if you are from the US/EU, you do not need to apply for a Visa at the Consulate)

3. A round-trip air ticket.

4. Buy a JR Rail Pass. It will save you a lot of money on traveling expenses.

Before leaving for Japan, you might want to make reservations at hostels or hotels. Some hostels that are good are Sakura House, or Khaosan.

I'm not sure about your budget. If the room rate is more than 15,000 yen, I think most hotels have free Internet access.
But bring short LAN cable. Not all the hotels adopt wireless.

The speed in following hotels are quite alright.

Most hotels uses proxy server.
You will be able to receive email , but may not be able to send via Outlook Express (web based mail is Ok).
I find this kind of system in other East Asian area as well, like Taiwan and Hongkong.
